Isabella’s Apprenticeship Journey at Wynnum Manly Meals on Wheels
For apprentice chef Isabella, cooking has always been about more than just preparing food, it’s about bringing people together.
“I’ve always enjoyed cooking and the way food brings people together,” Isabella says. “That’s what inspired me to pursue a career as a chef.”
That passion led her to begin an apprenticeship with Wynnum Meals on Wheels, where she has the opportunity to develop her culinary skills while making a meaningful difference in the lives of people throughout the local community.
Since starting her apprenticeship, Isabella has gained valuable experience in a busy commercial kitchen environment. She has strengthened her food preparation techniques, improved her time management skills, and learned the importance of teamwork in delivering hundreds of nutritious meals each week.
“The skills I’ve developed the most are food preparation, time management and teamwork,” she explains. “I’ve also learned how to work efficiently in a busy kitchen.”
Like many apprentices, Isabella has faced challenges along the way. Adapting to the fast-paced nature of the kitchen while maintaining strict food safety standards and consistent meal quality has required dedication and focus.
“The most challenging part has been keeping up with the fast pace of the kitchen while maintaining high standards of quality and food safety,” she says. “But it’s helped me become more organised and confident.”
What makes the role particularly rewarding for Isabella is knowing that every meal prepared has a direct impact on someone in the community.
“It’s very rewarding to know that the meals I prepare are helping people in the community and making a positive difference in their day.”
One of the most powerful lessons Isabella has learned during her apprenticeship has come from hearing the feedback of clients who rely on the service.
“Hearing positive feedback from clients and learning how much they appreciate the meals has really shown me the importance of what we do and the impact it has on their lives.”
The experience has also given her a deeper appreciation for the work that happens behind the scenes at Meals on Wheels.
“What has surprised me most is how much of an impact a simple meal can have on someone’s life,” Isabella reflects. “I’ve also been surprised by the amount of teamwork and care that goes into making sure every meal is prepared and delivered to a high standard.”
As Isabella continues her apprenticeship journey, she is not only building a career in the hospitality industry but also helping ensure that older Australians and other vulnerable members of the community receive nutritious meals and regular social connection.
Her story is a reminder that sometimes the simplest acts of care, a freshly prepared meal, a friendly delivery, or a helping hand, can make the biggest difference.
