Our Story

1

Origins of Meals on Wheels (1940s)

Britain, WWII: The concept of Meals on Wheels was born during the Second World War to support older individuals who wanted to remain in their own homes but needed assistance. Volunteers delivered hot meals daily, ensuring those in need had both nourishment and social contact.
2

Australia’s First Meals on Wheels Service (1953)

South Melbourne: The first Australian service began with a single volunteer delivering meals on a tricycle for two shillings each. As demand grew, the Red Cross stepped in to expand the initiative, laying the foundation for what would become a nationwide movement.
3

Bringing Meals on Wheels to Queensland (1956)

Ipswich: Mrs. Rhoda Cameron, the wife of the Commonwealth Health Minister, returned from England inspired by a meals service she had seen. Determined to help those struggling in her own community, she partnered with Mrs. Russell to launch Queensland’s first Meals on Wheels service from a backyard gardener’s cottage. Meals were served from a thermos flask and pudding basin, sold at just two shillings each. With no government funding, they relied on community support to keep the service going.

From Humble Beginnings to Statewide Impact (1950s – Present)

A Movement Gains Momentum: What started as a small, volunteer-driven effort grew into an essential service across Queensland. More local groups formed, driven by the same mission—to help people live independently with dignity. Over time, government funding, donations, and volunteers enabled the service to expand, reaching more communities in need.
