Turning a Passion into a Lifetime of Impact
When Roslyn “Ros” Broom first connected with Meals on Wheels™ Sunnybank in 1996, it was to provide volunteering opportunities for nutrition students. Little did she know, this chance encounter would spark a 29-year journey of dedication, innovation, and leadership that would touch communities across Queensland.
Ros’ early involvement started at the grassroots, driving meals, assisting in the kitchen, and supporting local volunteers. But her impact quickly expanded. She took on leadership roles at Sunnybank, serving as Secretary and President, and in 2019 was elected Chairperson of Queensland Meals on Wheels™ (MOWQ), guiding the organisation through one of its most challenging periods.
Leading Through Uncharted Waters
When COVID-19 swept across Queensland, Meals on Wheels™ faced the enormous challenge of continuing essential services while navigating complex public health requirements. Ros’ leadership was pivotal. For over two and a half years, she provided guidance to 145 services, helping implement new systems and protocols that ensured every meal reached those who needed it, safely and reliably.
“People rely on us for more than just food,” Ros reflects. “It was about keeping the connection alive and making sure no one felt alone.” Her dedication turned a period of uncertainty into an example of resilience, compassion, and ingenuity.

Innovating for the Future
Beyond crisis management, Ros has been a driving force behind the organisation’s growth and sustainability. Through Project Horizon, she oversaw the amalgamation of multiple services across South-East Queensland, creating stronger, more efficient, and collaborative models. Her vision allowed services with differing systems to work together under one umbrella, reducing administrative burdens and providing a solid foundation for future growth.
Ros also championed volunteer support. She introduced the HUB model, easing pressure on volunteers by separating governance from delivery and kitchen roles. Her initiatives ensured that volunteers could focus on what matters most, connecting with clients, without being weighed down by bureaucracy.
A Commitment Measured in People and Hours
With over 36,000 hours of service, spanning kitchen work, deliveries, board leadership, and international representation, Ros’ dedication is immeasurable. Yet, despite the scale of her contributions, she remains grounded in the relationships that fuel her passion.
“To me, it’s all about the people,” Ros says. “The friendships, the connections, and the shared purpose, that’s why I’ve stayed so long.” Even in retirement from MOWQ, she continues to volunteer, mentor, and celebrate the efforts of others, ensuring her legacy extends far beyond her own achievements.
A Living Legend
Roslyn Broom’s vision, determination, and unwavering care have shaped Meals on Wheels™ in Queensland for nearly three decades. Her leadership during crises, commitment to volunteers, and innovative thinking have strengthened communities and inspired countless others. It is with great pride that we honour her with the 2025 Mary Lowe Living Legend Award, a recognition of a remarkable lifetime of service.
Here’s to Ros, whose passion, insight, and heart continue to inspire us all.
