Carolyn’s Story: More Than Just a Meal
As we launch into the new year, we do so with inspiration and meaning from the people who form our community. This includes the family members of clients who look to Meals on Wheels to not only provide nutritious meals, but also connection, reassurance, and care for the people they love.
People like Carolyn, whose father was receiving support following the passing of her mother. Carolyn shared with us during the year how Meals on Wheels became an essential part of her family’s lives.
“After Mum died, we had to rethink our plans for Dad,” she explained. “He was living with his grief and his memories of Mum all inside the family home, which is steadfastly where he wanted to stay.”
While he was not physically frail, Carolyn knew her father was vulnerable as his cognitive capacity was in decline. The family wanted to support his independence while ensuring he was safe and cared for.
“Meals on Wheels was the first organisation we thought of as a means to ensure he received a fresh meal daily,” Carolyn said, “and equally, if not more importantly for the family, someone to knock on the door and make sure he was okay.”
Meals on Wheels volunteers quickly became a trusted and deeply valued presence.
“The volunteers were so patient and caring for Dad that it still brings a tear to my eye,” Carolyn recalled.
Beyond delivering meals, the volunteers noticed the small things that mattered, calling the family if something didn’t seem right, and celebrating birthdays and other important dates along the way.
For her father, the visits brought routine, dignity and human connection. For Carolyn and her siblings, they brought peace of mind.
“Everyday Meals on Wheels delivered was a special day,” she said, “because we knew he would be checked in on when we couldn’t.”
Reflecting on her family’s experience, Carolyn shared, “Meals on Wheels has a special place in our hearts and in our communities, let it be so for years to come.”
Carolyn’s story is a powerful reminder that Meals on Wheels is more than just a meal. It is care at the doorstep, connection in times of vulnerability, and reassurance for families. It is why volunteers and staff across Queensland are rolling up their sleeves as we head into 2026.
