General Volunteering FAQs

Is there a minimum age for volunteering?

Children under the age of 15 are not permitted to volunteer in the kitchen. They can deliver meals if accompanied by a parent/guardian who is willing to take full responsibility for their safety, as they are not covered under our insurance policies.

Do I need a Blue Card or Police Check to volunteer?

You do not require a Blue Card to volunteer with Meals on Wheels, however, we will require a form of worker screening to take place prior to your first shift which we can arrange with you. This may be a Police Check or NDIS Worker Screening.

Do I need any prior experience to volunteer?

No prior experience is necessary! We provide all the training and support you need to get started.

How much of my time is needed to volunteer?

Typically, a meal delivery run is completed within 2hrs. If you would prefer to volunteer in a kitchen, any amount of time you can contribute within kitchen operating hours (mornings) is appreciated. Each kitchen has different duties for volunteers to complete which may vary in time commitment.

The frequency at which you volunteer is up to you. We have volunteers who help us daily, weekly, fortnightly or monthly. Some even prefer to be on call for when another volunteer is unwell or unable to do their shift.

These volunteer opportunities occur on weekdays, usually in the morning as meals are delivered by lunch time. If this doesn’t suit you, please contact your local service to see if any other volunteer opportunities are available.

Will I be insured while volunteering?

Personal Accident Cover for volunteers (which is similar to the State Government’s compulsory work cover for paid employees) covers volunteers for certain out-of-pocket expenses following accidental injury, disability or death while carrying out their work on behalf of the organisation.

Will I be insured while volunteering?

Can I volunteer with my friend/family?

Of course! Your local service will do their best to accommodate your preferences and allow you to volunteer with your friend or family member. Just make sure to let them know.

What kind of tasks do volunteers do?

Volunteers help with meal delivery, kitchen prep, client check-ins, fundraising, administration, and more. Your local service can match you with a role that suits your skills and availability.

Can I volunteer on weekends or evenings?

Most of our volunteering opportunities take place on weekday mornings, as meals are delivered by lunchtime. However, some services may have roles available outside these hours. Meals on Wheels Queensland is also involved in various fundraising events throughout the year, such as the 50-50 Charity Raffle. Keep an eye on our social media and event page to stay updated on ways to get involved.

How do I arrange a corporate volunteering opportunity for my workplace?

We welcome corporate volunteers and would love to hear from you if you’re looking to volunteer in this capacity. Please send an email to info@qmow.org and tell us some details, including your location, how many people you have, how much time you would like to volunteer for, and whether you want to volunteer regularly or not. Also, let us know whether your staff can volunteer across different days and times or whether you want to volunteer all together.

Do I use my own vehicle to deliver meals?

If you indicate that you would like to be a delivery driver, it is more than likely you will use your personal vehicle to deliver meals. If you would prefer not to do this, you can choose to be a delivery aid or volunteer in the kitchen. The delivery aid sits in the passenger seat and assists the driver to deliver meals.

Can I choose where I volunteer?

Absolutely! Have a look at the various Meals on Wheels locations across Queensland here to find the most suitable location for you. Then register to volunteer and send us an email to info@qmow.org with your preferred location. Otherwise, we will assign you to the location closest to your residential suburb that accommodates your role preferences.

The volunteering opportunities can differ slightly between locations, so if one service isn’t the right fit, you’re welcome to try another location.

I’m interested in becoming a committee member, how do I find out more about this?

Fantastic! Many Meals on Wheels locations are looking for people to step into committee positions. Find a Meals on Wheels service in your preferred location by clicking here and enquire directly with them. Alternatively, you can contact us on 1300 90 97 90 for more information.

If I have accessibility requirements, can I volunteer?

Although most of our Meals on Wheels locations are accessible for all people, we can’t guarantee the same of our client’s homes.
