 Delivering Nutrition to the Housebound Elderly

The HACC Resource Unit and Queensland Meals on Wheels recently invited attendees to a one day workshop held Wednesday 18th June 2008 at the Chermside Bowls Club focussing on the issues relating to Nutrition and the Housebound Elderly.  The workshop was a real success and it is hoped will lead to further research, development and actions in relation to assisting our elderly clients to meet the required nutritional outcomes enabling them to reduce hospital visits and remain living independently at home.

 

Session 1

The Prevalence of Under Nutrition in the Community Living Elderly

Dr Peter Lipski, Staff Specialist Geriatrician, Clinical Director Rehabilitation and Aged Care and Conjoint Associate Professor, Newcastle University

Topics presented:

  • the health implications of malnutrition
  • the complications and health costs associated with malnutrition
  • the interaction between malnutrition, pharma co connectics and adverse drug reactions
  • the complexity of multi comorbidities and physical disabilities with malnutrition
  • malnutrition and dementia in the community
  • screening procedures
  • nutritional care of the housebound elderly and ways to improve this important and neglected area
